The Claude Sonnet 5 Price Increase That Was Cancelled
On 2026-08-20 Anthropic announced that Claude Sonnet 5's introductory $2.00 / $10.00 per million tokens would become $3.00 / $15.00 on 2026-09-01. On 2026-08-24 it cancelled that increase and made the introductory rate the standard rate. A 1,500-word article stays at $0.0203 rather than rising to $0.0304 — about $1.01 per hundred articles that nobody now pays.
Recorded from Anthropic's own pricing page when the rise was announced, and withdrawn from the live data the day it was cancelled — the calculator, the pricing table and the model guide all quote the rate in force on the day you read them, which is why none of them ever showed $3 / $15.
The rise that would have been, in the units you budget in
One draft, a 250-word brief, 20% prompt overhead — the same workflow every comparison on this site uses. The left column is the published rate that was withdrawn before it billed anyone; the right is what Sonnet 5 charges.
| Announced for 2026-09-01 | What you actually pay | |
|---|---|---|
| Input, per 1M tokens | $3.00 | $2.00 |
| Cached input, per 1M tokens | $0.30 | $0.20 |
| Output, per 1M tokens | $15.00 | $10.00 |
| One 1,500-word article | $0.0304 | $0.0203 |
| 100 articles a month | $3.04 | $2.03 |
| Batch tier, per article | $0.0152 | $0.0101 |
The announced rate would have moved Sonnet 5 from rank 34 to rank 40 of 55 tracked models for a 1,500-word article. It holds rank 34.
The mid-tier keeps its spread
The pick stands, and its price argument survives intact
Sonnet 5 remains the recommendation of our model guide. The increase would not have changed that — $1.01 per hundred 1,500-word articles is less than a minute of editing time at any realistic editorial rate — but its cancellation removes the one caveat the guide carried: that the rate you budgeted on had a published expiry date. It does not any more.
Three things worth doing anyway
Use the batch tier
Anthropic's batch tier halves eligible charges for up-to-24-hour turnaround, pricing the same article at $0.0101 — a third of the $0.0304 the announced standard rate would have charged.
Undo the migration you may have started
If the announcement pushed you to price out Claude Sonnet 4.6 or GPT-5.4 as replacements, that reason is gone: Sonnet 5 is cheaper per article than both again. Compare them on draft quality if you like, but not to escape a rise that is not coming.
Leave your budget alone
Any annual figure you revised upward between 2026-08-20 and 2026-08-24 now overstates Sonnet 5 spend by a third. Every figure on the calculator uses the live rate, so re-read your saved scenario rather than the note you made that week.
The Sonnet 5 price change
Did the Claude Sonnet 5 price increase happen?
No. Anthropic announced on 2026-08-20 that Sonnet 5's introductory $2.00 / $10.00 per million tokens would rise to $3.00 / $15.00 on 2026-09-01. On 2026-08-24 it cancelled that increase and made the introductory rate the standard rate. Sonnet 5 bills $2.00 / $10.00 today, and no rise is scheduled.
How much does Claude Sonnet 5 cost now?
$2.00 / $10.00 per million tokens, with cached input at $0.20. A 1,500-word article costs $0.0203 in API fees. Had the announced increase gone ahead the same article would have cost $0.0304 — about $1.01 more per hundred articles, which is the difference nobody is now paying.
Is the $2 / $10 rate still introductory?
No, and that is the substantive part of the announcement. It was introductory pricing with a published end date of 2026-08-31; Anthropic has since published it as the standard rate. An annual budget built on $2.00 / $10.00 no longer carries a scheduled step-up, which was not true a week ago.
Is Claude Sonnet 5 still the best-value pick?
Yes, and by a wider margin than the announcement implied. At $0.0203 per 1,500-word draft it undercuts Claude Sonnet 4.6 ($0.0304) and GPT-5.4 ($0.0302) rather than matching them, so the mid-tier did not collapse to one price after all — Sonnet 5 sits below it.
What does Sonnet 5 cost on the batch tier?
Anthropic's batch tier halves eligible token charges for up-to-24-hour turnaround, pricing the same 1,500-word article at $0.0101. That is a third of what the announced standard rate would have charged.
Where these numbers come from
The rates are transcribed from Anthropic's published pricing and re-verified weekly. Both halves of this story are logged in the verification changelog — the announcement on 2026-08-20 and the cancellation on 2026-08-24 — as separate entries, because the log is appended to and never rewritten. Per-article figures apply the token model documented on the methodology page; the announced column prices the rate that was published and withdrawn, and never billed anyone.
A 50% rise that was announced, then called off
Token spend was the smallest line in an article budget at either rate, so the cancellation changes less about what you should pick than the headline suggests. What it does change is the footnote: Sonnet 5's rate is standard now, with no published end date, so it is a number you can put in an annual budget without an asterisk.
